Dialectical Behavior Therapy in Bucks County and Montgomery County
DBT Through a Licensed, Accredited IOP for Teens and Adults
Hope Springs Behavioral Health offers dialectical behavior therapy as one of the core therapeutic modalities in our intensive outpatient program (IOP). Our care team includes board-certified psychiatrists working alongside licensed therapists and trained clinicians, and our program is licensed by both the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services and the Pennsylvania Department of Health (DDAP) and accredited by The Joint Commission. That clinical infrastructure matters when you’re choosing where to pursue DBT.
DBT is a structured, skills-based form of cognitive behavioral therapy for people living with mood disorders, intense emotional distress, interpersonal difficulties, and chronic problems with emotion regulation. It’s also one of the most widely researched treatments for borderline personality disorder. The therapy rests on a straightforward dialectical principle: you can accept yourself as you are right now and still work toward meaningful change. Both things are true at once. We offer separate, age-specific IOP tracks for teens (ages 13–17) and adults (ages 18+), each designed around the distinct clinical needs of that group, so treatment fits the person rather than the other way around.

What Sets Our DBT Program Apart
Many outpatient programs offer DBT in some form. Fewer deliver it within a structure that includes psychiatric services, family therapy, and insurance assistance under one roof. At Hope Springs Behavioral Health, those aren’t add-ons arranged separately after intake. They’re built into the program from the start.
Psychiatric evaluation and medication management are available within the IOP itself. Clients don’t need to coordinate outside psychiatric care while simultaneously managing a therapy schedule. That continuity can reduce friction and keep the clinical team aligned around each person’s progress. And because clients are assigned an individual therapist who follows them through the program, treatment decisions are made by someone who already knows you.
Personalized Treatment Plans
No two clients follow the same path. Treatment plans are built around individual history, goals, and clinical needs, and clinicians reassess and adjust strategies as progress is made. Some clients move from processing-focused support into skills-based work over time. Others begin skills training earlier. The plan reflects the person, not a protocol.
Family Therapy and Marriage Counseling
Family therapy is included as a standard component of our IOP. The people around you are part of your recovery environment, and we work to strengthen those connections directly. Marriage counseling is also available for couples navigating the relational impact of emotional dysregulation.
Insurance Assistance
Our IOP is covered by most commercial insurance plans, and we’re now accepting Bucks County Medicaid/HealthChoices. Sliding-scale fee options are available for those who qualify. We work with individuals and families to navigate their benefits so that cost doesn’t become a barrier to getting started.

The Four Core DBT Skill Modules
DBT is organized around four skill sets, each targeting a different dimension of emotional and relational functioning. Together, they give clients concrete tools they can use outside of sessions, not just insight into why certain patterns exist.
The four modules are:
- Mindfulness. This involves staying present and nonjudgmental, and noticing thoughts, feelings, and sensations without being swept away by them.
- Distress tolerance. Clients can learn how to survive a crisis without making it worse. These skills help you move through painful moments without acting on impulses that escalate the situation.
- Emotion regulation. Identifying what you’re feeling, understanding what that emotion signals, and reducing its intensity when it’s interfering with your life are crucial components of DBT.
- Interpersonal effectiveness. This includes learning to ask for what you need, say no when necessary, and manage conflict in ways that preserve your relationships and your self-respect.
DBT’s skills-based structure distinguishes it from therapies focused primarily on insight. Clients practice these techniques in session and carry them into daily life. Within our IOP, skills groups offer a class-style setting where participants learn alongside peers, while individual therapy provides a dedicated space to apply those strategies to each person’s specific circumstances.
What to Expect When Starting DBT
Getting started begins with a conversation. During intake, our counselors take time to understand where you are, what you’re facing, and which program elements are the right clinical fit. From there, your care plan takes shape, including which group settings are most appropriate. Depending on your needs, that may include DBT skills training, group therapy, art therapy, or a combination of approaches.
Questions about insurance and scheduling are all part of that intake conversation. You don’t need to have everything figured out before you call.
