Marriage Counseling as Part of Intensive Outpatient Care

Hope Springs Behavioral Health is a family-owned outpatient mental health treatment center that's licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services and the Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs (DDAP), and accredited by The Joint Commission. As part of our intensive outpatient care (IOP) program, we offer marriage counseling. It is coordinated by an assigned primary therapist and supported by a care team that includes board-certified psychiatrists. We accept most commercial insurance plans, as well as Pennsylvania Medicaid/HealthChoices.

If you’re considering IOP and wondering whether relationship support may be part of your treatment plan, call us at (215) 491-9900 to learn more.

How Marriage Counseling Works Within IOP

Each client in our IOP is assigned a primary individual therapist who serves as the central coordinator for all care components. If marriage counseling is clinically appropriate, those sessions are scheduled in coordination with that therapist and the broader treatment team, which may include outside providers, family members, and Hope Springs Behavioral Health clinical staff.

When it serves the enrolled client’s treatment goals, partners may be invited to participate in certain sessions. However, the partner doesn’t enroll in IOP. The focus remains on the enrolled individual’s recovery, with relational sessions structured to reduce stressors that could interfere with that progress.

Our IOP also includes psychiatric evaluations and access to medication management, with psychiatrists or nurse practitioners available for up to one year following successful IOP discharge. Morning, afternoon, and evening scheduling options are available to fit a range of schedules.

Why Relational Support Belongs Inside a Structured Clinical Program

Depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders don’t solely impact the individual experiencing them. They can affect communication, erode trust, and place real strain on intimate relationships. When that relational stress also functions as a trigger or barrier to recovery, addressing it in isolation, outside the broader clinical picture, limits what treatment can accomplish.

Traditional couples therapy focuses primarily on communication and conflict resolution between two people. Marriage counseling within an IOP at Hope Springs Behavioral Health works differently. Sessions are embedded in the enrolled client’s broader treatment plan, kept aligned with their recovery goals, and coordinated with the rest of their care. The clinical team determines when and whether relational sessions are appropriate based on each person’s clinical presentation. This is not a default add-on. Rather, it's a purposeful component of individualized care.

Is Marriage Counseling the Right Fit for You?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Marriage Counseling Available as a Standalone Service at Hope Springs Behavioral Health?

No, marriage counseling is available only as a component of our intensive outpatient program. Those looking for independent couples therapy should seek a provider that offers that as a primary service.

Does My Partner Have to Enroll in IOP to Participate?

No, your partner doesn’t need to enroll in IOP. When clinically appropriate, partners may be invited to participate in certain sessions to support the enrolled client’s treatment goals.

The IOP remains focused on the individual who is enrolled, and partner participation is determined by the clinical team based on what serves that person’s recovery.

Who Leads the Marriage Counseling Sessions?

Sessions are led by licensed and license-eligible mental health professionals with experience in couples dynamics and behavioral health. All sessions are coordinated with the client’s primary individual therapist and the broader Hope Springs Behavioral Health care team, which may include board-certified psychiatrists and outside providers involved in the client’s care.

How Is It Determined Whether Marriage Counseling Will Be Part of My Plan?

That determination is made during the intake and clinical assessment process. Our intake appointment is approximately 90 minutes and includes a biopsychosocial history, risk assessment, and review of family and relationship dynamics.

If relational conflicts are contributing to or impacted by your mental health symptoms, our clinical team may recommend incorporating marriage counseling into your individualized treatment plan.

Does Insurance Cover Marriage Counseling Within IOP?

Our IOP is covered by most commercial insurance plans, and we’re now accepting Medicaid/HealthChoices. Because marriage counseling is a component of IOP, coverage is tied to your IOP benefits. Our admissions team can help you understand your benefits and navigate the process. Sliding scale fees are also available for those who qualify.
